Position Summary

As the Systems Design Lead, you will own the design, architecture, and evolution of core gameplay and simulation systems within AtomEngine. You will delve into deep research of real-world phenomena, then concept and rigorously define the mechanics, models, and rules that faithfully abstract them. Additionally, you will own the interaction of these systems at scale, ensuring internal consistency, balance, and extensibility across the model. In short, you will be responsible for the beating heart of AtomEngine.

Key Responsibilities

– System Ownership: Lead the design of core simulation systems (mechanics, AI behaviors, conceptual models, balance models, etc.), ensuring they scale from tactical to strategic scenarios.
– Customer Research & Domain Empathy: Lead direct research with customers and subject matter experts to deeply understand their domains, responsibilities, and real-world phenomena. Translate these insights into simulation systems that are both credible representations of reality and usable by practitioners.
– Frameworks & Patterns: Establish reusable design frameworks and patterns that enable extensibility, meeting the current need while also supporting future modules.
– AI Design: Envision scalable AI frameworks that produce agents capable of pursuing complex goals and adapting to their environment using modular components—components that can be modified by both the internal content team and end customers to meet evolving needs.

Qualifications

– Proven experience in systems design for professional-grade simulation tools, large-scale games, or complex software platforms.
– Strong background in game/simulation systems thinking, including balance, progression, and systemic interactions.
– Agility to adapt to a dynamic landscape of customer needs—balancing quick tactical improvements, major overhauls of legacy systems, and the design of entirely new features simultaneously.
– Familiarity with ECS architectures, data-driven design, and authoring tools for content creation.
– Demonstrated experience designing or working with AI agent frameworks (GOAP, HTN, utility AI, reinforcement learning, or modular behavior systems).
